Notes from Fred Lager: (note this contains many errors)
Antone had a brother who migrated to the area of Bureau Co., Illinois.
That brother later settled near the area of St. Cloud, Minnesota. He
enlisted in the Union Army, but was killed in action during the Civil
War. This brother's glowing reports of the area surrounding Bureau County
may have been the initial enducement for Antone and later members of the
Walter family to leave Germany and migrate to the area.
Antone settled in Section 2 of Ohio Township, Bureau County, Illinois in
early 1865. He and his wife were the parents of eleven children.
Eventually, his farm included land that was in Section 1 and 2 of Ohio
Township. The 1870 Census valued Antone's property at 3000 dollars and
his estate at 350 dollars. This may be the A.S. Walter who started the
'Walter Brothers & Co.' general store in the village of Ohio in 1872 with
a brother John. The first freight that was delivered to Ohio was for
these brothers on theMendota-Fulton branch of the C.B. & Q. railroad,
referenced in the "Early History of the Village of Ohio". The Walter
Brothers & Company building was on the corner of Main and Railroad street
in Ohio. At one time, all grain, hog, and cattle checks were paid by
Walter Brothers and Co., until a bank was organized in the community. In
1903, A.S. Walter purchased a large three story home located near the
Catholic Church. In 1906, additional rooms were added to the home and it
eventually became known as the Mercy Home. In the 1950's, it was known as
Doran Apartments.
