"The petition of Mary Barnes for divorce from Charles Barnes was granted
5-11-1669 (New London Co, CT) and very shortly after, on 6-3-1669, Mary
Barnes married John Huntley of Lyme (New London Co), CT; whereupon they
were fined 10 ponds for fornication before marriage. The large size of
the fine may have been because Mary could have been charged with the more
serious crime of adultery; and that she was not so charged may be because
her husband had deserted her a few years before."
