"Guy Long born 2/4/87, Dodge Nebraska, farm outside Dodge. Raised
corn, wheat. Bought wild stock in western Nebraska. Fed them the corn
oats and marketed them. Took the wheat in to Dodge and had it ground
into flour for family use.
"When Guy was 14 years old they moved out to Wilson Creek,
Washington. "Grandpa Long, Uncle Jim Vickery and Uncle Gran Ogan came
out and homesteaded. Then went back for their families in Nebraska. They
travelled west by train - passenger for the family and freight for
Grandpa and the stock. Railroads gave a free pass for one person riding
with the stock. Stock was a cow, team of black buggy horses, work horses
(?).
"They lived in Wilson Creek for two wheat harvests, then moved to
Cashmere. Homesteaded in Hay Canyon and over the ridge into Nahaham (?)
Canyon, with Mr. Clarence Griffin. They had to go to Waterville to file
and got in just ahead of John L. Sullivan who had come to file on the
same property. Dick Morris worked for them in Hay Canyon. This farm
sold to R.U. James (year?). "Grandpa traded some real estate for stock in
Big Dept Store.
"Dad went to school in Cashmere. Graduated from 8th grade. Went to
Wilson business College in Seattle one winter. Went to work at Big D as
Manager. Earned $35/month when he was married. Grandpa and Grandma gave
him a lot in Cashmere for a wedding present and he borrowed $500 and
built a house. They were married at Mother's folks home in Brender
Canyon and drove down to their new home in a horse and buggy."
