Descended from Resolve White who came over in the Mayflower. She was
taken captive by Indians, but was returned on January 17, 1699, on the
Province Galley from Casco Bay. While in captivity she acquired a
knowledge of herbs which resulted in her afterwards dispensing medicine
and being called "Doctress."

1017. * Mary Hayward(1887) (1888)(1889) was born on DEC 5 1671.(1890) She
died on JAN 5 1734 in Lancaster, Worcester Co., MA.(1891) (1892) (1893)

*Fairbanks Family: During the Lancaster, MA massacre of Sept. 11, 1697,
She "was taken captive and carried to Canada, but was afterward rescued
or ransomed by the government. She was received at 'Cascoe Bay, ye 17
January, 1698-9, aboard the Province Galley,' and returned home to her
surviving children."

*Rix : Her first husband, Jonathan Fairbanks, was killied by Indians in a
raid on Lancaster, Mass. Mary "was captured in the raid, taken to Canada,
and held until 1698, when she was redeemed by the Government, when on
Jan. 17, 1698-9, she was received on board the 'Province Gally', and
returned to her two surviving children, when in a year from the next
January she m. David Whitcomb." While she "was in Canada, she learned
from the Indians to doctor with roots and herbs, and practiced the art as
long as she lived."

*Lancaster Records : She was captured during King William's War, in 1697.
"On Sept 11 a party of the enemy came upon the town of Lancaster then
prepared for mischief by a wonderful security, and they did no little
mischief unto it. Near twenty were killed and among the rest Mr John
Whiting the Pastor of the Church there. Five were carried captives, two
or three houses were burnt and several old people in them. Capt. Brown
with fifty men persued them till the night stopped the pursuit, but it
seems a strange dog or two unknown to the company did by their barking
alarum the enemy to rise in the night, and strip and scalp an English
captive woman and fly so far into the woods that after two days bootless
labour our men returned."

Note: although several Mary Haywards are listed in "Mayflower Families",
I have not been able to make a link to this Mary or her parents. There is
a Mary Haward, also b. Dec 5, 1671,[p.105] who was a daughter of Anna
White [daughter of Resolve] and John Hayward, but she is listed as being
married to John Willard [p.120] [note: there is some doubt given here]
