Owen served as a volunteer in Butler's Rangers during the American
Revolution, and his father were with Major John Ross on the raid down the
Mohawk River in October 1781, on which Captain Butler was killed.87 He
was discharged from the army as a sergeant, 2nd Battalion, R.R. NY.95 His
property was confiscated after the war. He settled in Prince Edward
County in 1784 on leaving the army,87 and lived in Hallowell Township.21
He was active in the local militia, and eventually Colonel of the
battalion.87 He is listed as the commanding officer (rank of Lt. Colonel)
in charge of the 2nd Regiment, Prince Edward County, Ontario Militia
1822, along with James Young, 43.97 He was still alive in 1861.

2nd Regiment Prince Edward county , Ontario Militia 1822
The Regiment was under the command of Lt. Col Owen Richards, which was
dated at Hallowell, Ontario May 15,1822. It is preserved in the Public
Archives of Canada at Ottawa The numbers beside each name is their age at
time of service. There are 409 men in this muster roll. Question marks
mean "may be spelling error".
Many of these men were United Empire Loyalists who fought in the American
Revolutionary War. They served in this Regiment along side their sons,
brothers and cousins.

THE MILITIA.

Major Young, formerly ensign in Sir John Johnson's regiment, was an
officer in the Prince Edward Militia for some time. He was at Kingston in
1812, and died while on duty. Captain McDonnell of Marysburgh, was also
on duty at Kingston at that time. Captain Young, of the Carrying Place,
was likewise there, as well as his Ensign, W. H. Wallbridge, who became
Captain in 1831, Owen Richards being the Colonel. Lieutenant Richard
Howard, of Sophiasburgh, [p.551] died March 1, 1814. Dengin Conger held
a commission in the first battalion of the Prince Edward Militia during
twenty-four years, fourteen of which he was Captain. William Ketcheson,
of Sidney, was commissioned Ensign in 1804; Lieutenant in 1812 Captain
toward the close of the war, served nine months at Kingston. Coleman, of
Belleville, was Captain of Provincial Light Dragoous.

Hazelton Spencer, Di ana's brother. In 1831 Owen was a Colonel. Each of
the five children received O/C Land Gran ts in 1818 - 1820 - 1825 as
descendants of the United Empire Loyalists.

Society 1976, page 18, i tem 22: Col. Owen Richards settled upon this
farm (Lot 4, in the 2nd Concession S.S.E.L. Ath ol). The son of John and
Elsie Richards, he was born near Fort Hunter, Province of New York ,
about 1762. He served in the 2nd Bn. Royal Regiment of New York during
the American Revolu tion and participated in the raid against
revolutionary forces in the Mohawk Valley in 1781 . He served as an
officer in the First Prince Edward County Milita, eventually becoming it
s colonel.
