Benjamin Spencer was the son of William Spencer and Elizabeth Rice , was born January 28,1736 in East Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island. He married Mercy Potter January 09, 1757 in by Giles Pierce, Justice. He died November 04, 1777 in Ticonderoga, Essex County, New York. Mercy Potter was the daughter of Abel Potter and Sarah Lockwood , was born May 04, 1736 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island. She died in Brighton, Northumberland, Ontario Canada.

Benjamin Spencer became a Justice of the Provincial Court of Vermont, and
at the outbreak of the American Revolutionary war, he was elected a
member of the Provisional Assembly or Congress, charged with the duty of
deciding the course which the Province should take in relation to the
rebellion. He was an uncompromising British loyalist, and soon found
himself in hopeless minority; he was obliged to flee for his life in
consequence. Feeling at that time ran very high. He took refuge with the
army of Gen. Burgoyne, the British commander at that time, and died at
Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain, shortly after the celebrated battle of
Bennington, which was fought 16th August 1777.

Records, vol 1, pgs 63 and 64. He was of the Hampshire Grants, now
Vermont, was a Justice of the Peace of Albany Co. in 1770. He lived in
south part of Durham in 1772 in what is approximately now Clarendon, Vt.
He was a loyalist. In the summer of 1777, having taken protection under
Burgoyne, he went to Ticonderoga, and it is said died there a few weeks
later. He was a member of the Prov. Assembly of Congress. His land papers
and petitions are in Albany, NY. ***Addtional notes from Ian L.
Donaldson*** About 1767 the family moved from RI to what is now Vermont.
In 1775 they were living Durham Township. Benjamin served as a a member
of the Provisional Assembly of Vermont in 1777. He fled from the
Americans in 1777 to Canada with his son Hazelton, leaving the rest of
the family behind. He died on his way to Canada. Their son, Hazelton was
born on 29 Aug 1757 in E.Greenwich RI. He came to Canada as a United
Empire Loyalist. He was married to Margaret Richards b: 1771. They had
ten children. Ian L. Donaldson descends from their ninth child, Daniel
Barnabus Augustus Spencer. ********** Source: The Greene's of Rhode
