Arent inherited his father's farm in what is now Rotterdam Junction, and
about 1735 he built a stone house near the first lock on the Erie Canal,
a house that stands today on Schermerhorn Road with a plaque on the front
lawn erected by the State Education Department. It has the high pitched
roof so typical of the early Dutch houses. Schermerhorn descendants live
there today.

Arent was a brewer and Commissioner of Indian Affairs. With various
partners, especially Philip Livingston, he obtained several land grants
along Schenevus Creek, along a branch of the Delaware River, and on two
branches of the Susquehanna River.
