FREDERICK LONG OBITUARY
Frederick Long was born in Hanover Germany, October 28, 1830. With
his parents, four brothers and one sister, he came to New York in the
spring of 1844. From June until October of that year he lived at Albany,
and so nearly did they become emigrants to New Brunswick that they had
placed their baggage on a canal boat for the journey when they were
persuaded to try American life at Albany for a while. In October, 1844,
they removed to Sandusky, Ohio, and that same fall into the peninsula in
Ottawa Co., east of Toledo. Here the parents died. Thence he removed to
Illinois in 1856, and settled southeast of Walnut, Ill.
He was married to Rachel Sinclair at Erie, Ohio, January 28, 1851.
For more than 52 years they walked life's pathways together, sharing its
joys and bearing its burdons and sorrows. A little more than eight months
ago his companion was taken from him to be with the just made perfect,
since which time he had longed to go and be with her in that summer land
where separation never comes. Five children were born in this home; one
is dead: Charles W.; the living are : Lewis M., John F., William I., and
Mrs. Mary Williams all residents of Van Orin, Illinois. He also has two
living brothers: Lewis Long of Big Timber, Montana, and William Long of
Walnut, Illinois. He was converted in the winter of 1862, in a meeting
conducted by G. B. Walker at Union school house near Limerick, and became
a charter member of the U. B. church of that place. In November 1865 he
removed to Van Orin and transferred his membership to the U.B. church of
that place, where he lived a good, earnest and spiritual life to the day
of his death. Since the death of his wife eight months ago he has made
his home with his daughter Mrs. Mary Williams, where he has been most
tenderly cared for by every member of the home. For a few days before
his death he had been somewhat ill but no one thought the end of his
earth life was so near. Without warning at 12 o'clock, noon, last
Sunday, March 20, 1904, he peacefully went to his rest from the labors,
conflicts, and hope of the church Militant to enter upon the joys,
rapture, and realities in the church triumphant at the ripe age of 73
years, 4 months, and 22 days. May the loved ones be comforted with hope
which is an anchor to the soul both sure and steadfast, because it
entereth into that within the vale, where our dear one is with Jesus who
hath said, 'I will come again, and recieve you unto myself; that where I
am there ye may be also.' The funeral services were held at the U. B.
church where a large aug\dience met to pay the last tribute of respect to
their neighbor and friend. His pastor Rev. Beers conducted the services
assisted by Rev. Garman."
